Your Pubic symphysis is the front part of your pelvis. Pubic Symphysis pain in pregnancy can come about and the pain can be very uncomfortable for many women and can sometimes be very disabling. During pregnancy, you release a hormone called RELAXIN which prepares your body for labour, this hormone helps to loosen your ligaments to prepare for labour and the birth. The effect of the softening of the ligaments can mean pain at the front of the pelvis around your pubic region (Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction) and at the back of your pelvis (Pelvic Girdle Pain) just above your buttocks.
Symptoms may start off mild and then they can gradually get worse as you progress through your pregnancy causing discomfort and affecting sleep and walking any distances.
Here at JYphysiotherapy we specialise in helping women reduce these symptoms throughout their pregnancy. We can offer advice on exercise which is a key component and offer hands on therapy that is effective at reducing some symptoms.
We also offer advice on belts and activity modification which also makes a difference. Monitoring how much walking you are doing will also help.
Early diagnosis is important and simple advice can help keep it at bay. Often a pelvic belt helps with the symptoms.
